Capital Punishment Is Necessary Essay - 1488 Words
Capital punishment and the practice of the death penalty is an issue that is passionately debated in the United States. Opponents of the death penalty claim that capital punishment is unnecessary since a life sentence accomplishes the same objective. What death penalty opponents neglect to tell you is that convicted murders and child rapists escape from prison every year(List of prison escapes, 2015). As I write this essay, police are searching for two convicted murders who escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in New York on June 6th, 2015. The ONLY punishment from which one cannot escape is the death penalty. Often times, jail sentencing does not do justice to murder. Sometimes, crime is so cruel that there is no realisticâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦When it fails to do that, they become of little use to its citizens. People throughout all the nations will soon realize that capital punishment, military or police force, and even taxes are an unavoidable consequence of every civilized society. It will no longer be the question of whether or not a nation should have the death penalty, but rather how it should be used. What can you say to the parents of the kids that were killed in Columbine High School? What can be done about juvenile murderers? President Bush proposed that the age at which penalty could be applied should be reduced from 21 to 18 (O Rourke 1). Many people agree that everyone who is considered a legal adult should be sentenced like one; that means possibly the death penalty. Those who advocate the abolition of capital punishment have supported their cause with many arguments. They have claimed that some have been wrongly sent to death row, while other decisions have been unfairly applied to minorities and the poor. Others argued for the sanctity of human life, as well as the expense involved in capital punishment. But those who believe in the opposition of the death penalty are often misled. They should consider the following cases that underlie the support for capital punishment, for it is certainly the only way to deal with the cruelty of crime that has infected our society. Measuring Fair Value Accounting Standards - 1346 Words
Fair Value accounting is a measurement application to value assets and liabilities based on current transactions among buyers and sellers in the market. In other words, the price market participants pay or receive in an orderly transaction at a certain date. There are different techniques for measuring fair values depending on asset and market activity. It includes market approach, cost approach, and income approach. Financial Accounting standards (FAS 157) defines fair value as ââ¬Å"the price that would be received to sell an asset or paid to transfer a liability in an orderly transaction between market participants at the measurement dateâ⬠(FASB, 2006). Different levels of inputs are also utilized in measuring values of assets andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In contrast, Historical Cost accounting is defined by recording assets or liabilities on its acquired cost. The nominal value that a company paid for an asset or recorded a liability. This measurement is based on a co st principal that states to record assets/liabilities at the acquisition value. In this approach, assets or liabilities are adjusted to its net realizable value in a systematic manner. For example, depreciation of fixed assets, amortization of intangible assets, and depletion of natural resources. These rational and systematics approaches to adjust assetsââ¬â¢ value to bring these instruments to its carrying value, deviating from the recorded historical cost. HCA (Historical Cost Accounting) and FVA (Fair Value Accounting) measurements techniques are accepted by both accounting standard setters FASB (Financial Accounting Standard Board) and IASB (International Accounting Standard board). Under both measurement approaches, there could be significant differences in reporting, measuring, adjusting, and disclosing values of assets and liabilities. GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and IFRS (Internal financial Reporting Standards) mostly apply fair value concepts to fina ncial assets and liabilities up to certain extent. On the other hand, HCA is usually used for fixed assets e.g. property, plant and equipment. FVA measurements are not fixed and fluctuate due to market volatility, but HCA values are mostly fixed and change under certain

John Keats la belle dame sans merci Essay Thesis Example For Students
John Keats la belle dame sans merci Essay Thesis Essay on La Belle Dame sans MerciJohn Keats was born in London on October 31, 1795. He was the son of a stable attendant who married the owners daughter and later inherited the stable for himself. The elder Mr. Keats died when John was eight, leaving the family tied up in legal matters that lasted the rest of Johns life. He was fourteen when his mother died of tuberculosis, and fifteen when his guardian apprenticed him to an apothecary-surgeon. Soon after, John left the medical field to focus primarily on poetry. In July 1820, John left England for Italy. He had suffered a serious hemorrhage of the lungs, which he at once recognized as a symptom of tuberculosis. He was told by doctors that the warmer air of Italy would help cure him. John and his friend took up residence in a home next to the famed Spanish Steps in Rome. He died of tuberculosis on February 23, 1821, at the age of twenty-six. John Keats wrote several romances, including Endymion, and The Eve of St. Agnes. He also wrote some lyrics, but the best known are the are the sonnets and a series of major odes that include an Ode to a Nightingale, Ode on a Grecian Urn, and To Autumn. One of his best known ballad is A Belle Dame sans Merci (A Women Without Pity). La Belle Dame sans Merci is an innovation for Keats since he had always been use to writing his usual iambic pentameter poems. The meter in La Belle Dame sans Merci was an experiment. Keats uses a lot of auditory and visual imagery. In addition, he also uses figurative language, understatement and overstatement all throughout the poem. On that account, he also uses a single exclamation mark throughout the poem that also contributes to the atmosphere of desolation. In conclusion, La Belle Dame sans Merci is a romantic poem because the knight meets a beautiful person that he thinks he falls in love with at first sight. Little does he know that she has cast a spell on him. Before the spell is cast he makes her a garland of flowers, a bracelet and a belt. She brings him goods to eat. According to the knight they have fallen in love at first sight, but the beautiful woman has no pity for men and leaves him with his heart in his hands. To that extend one would consider La Belle Dame sans Merci to be a romantic poem. Bibliography:

Plato Grandfather Of Democracy Essays - Philosophy,
Plato: Grandfather Of Democracy Plato: The Grandfather of Democracy The history and the evolution of what we know as law, has developed out of many different viewpoints and philosophies. It has been the result of the operational and manipulative aspects of public affairs, and also seems to be the creation of different philosophical systems. There have been many that have been innovators in this area of thought from political leaders and dictators, to others who were simple political idealists and philosophers. Through the wisdom and teachings of Plato, law has evolved into many different systems, and through this paper we will discuss the impact this particular philosopher had had on our modern system of democracy. We will also try to recognize that law will continue to evolve, as does man throughout history. Many people believe that Plato, whose life span was 427-348 B.C., has exerted a greater influence over human thought than any other individual studied throughout history. He was a student of another tremendous contributor to human thought, Socrates. Plato had written a commentary on democracy called The Republic. In this book he discusses the ill effects democracy has on the people, but also analyzes the inevitable need for political leaders. Plato argues that the inherent weakness of democracy exists and calls it the extreme of popular liberty(Platos, The Republic). But, when we discuss Platos views, we must take into account that his vision of democracy is much different than the modern system of democracy that we know today. Plato goes on to saythis system is where slaves -male and female- have the same liberty as their owners, and where there is complete equality and liberty in the relations between the sexes(The Republic). Another quote from The Republic shows how different it was from our own current view of the democratic system. Then in democracy, I went on, theres no compulsion either to exercise authority if you are capable of it, or to submit to authority if you dont want to; you neednt fight if theres a war, or you can wage a private war in peacetime if you dont like peace; and if theres any law that debars you from political or judicial office, you will none the less take either if they come your way. Its a wonderfully pleasant way if carrying on in the short run, isnt it?(The Republic). In An Introduction to Platos Republic by Julia Annas, she argues Plato presents democracy as defined by tolerant pluralism, but Athens was a populist democracy, with a clearly defined way of life separating those with power from those without, and about as tolerant of openly expressed nonconformity as McCarthyite America! Here, Annus is using the comparison of democracy to tolerant pluralism, as a way of saying that within Platos view of this type of political system there exists many different realities, and seems to question if law exists at all. She compares his so-called democracy as what is commonly referred to as anarchy. Plato believes there are three social classes in democracy: the drones (unemployed), the rich, and the working masses. He says there will eventually be a period of unrest between the people and the government, and the working class will put forward a single popular leader, whom they nurse to greatness, and it is this leader who is the root from which tyranny invariably springs(The Republic). Here I would like to point out that Platos leader who rises through a period of unrest from the working masses could be compared to Germanys Adolph Hitler. He too rose to greatness from a Democratic system, and what soon followed was the inevitablePlato referred to this as tyranny. Platos system of democracy in The Republic is much different than what we know of today as democracy, but the foundation is there, and we know that his system would inevitably lead to chaos, as it is indeed anarchy. But, as we see in Hitlers Germany, McCarthyite America, and Platos idea of democracy-tyranny, we also kn ow that whenever there is a ruling class we must question if it is truly for the good of the people. Still discussing the foundations of Platos democratic system, we see that Plato concluded that most people do not maintain the

Calculus Calculus is the mathematical study of change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of operations and their application to solving equations. It has two major branches, differential calculus (concerning rates of change and slopes of revues), and integral calculus (concerning accumulation of quantities and the areas under and between curves); these TV branches are related to each other by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Both branches make use of the fundamental notions of convergence of infinite sequences and infinite series to a well-defined limit. Generally considered to have been founded in the 17th century by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz, today calculus has widespread uses in science, engineering and economics and can solve many problems that algebra alone cannot. Calculus is a part of modern mathematics education. A course in calculus is a gateway to Other, more advanced courses in mathematics devoted to the study of functions and limits, broadly called mathematical analysis. Calculus has historically been called the calculus of infinitesimals, or infinitesimal calculus. The word calculus comes from Latin (calculus) and refers to a small stone used for counting. More generally, calculus (plural calculi) refers to any method or system of calculation guided by the symbolic manipulation of expressions. Some examples of other well-known calculi are propositional calculus, calculus of variations, lambda calculus. Part 1 INTERNET REFERENCE BOOK Leibniz was the first to see that the coefficients of a system of linear equations could be arranged into an array, now called a matrix which can be manipulated to find the of the system, if any.

The Maya Calendar
The Maya Calendar What is the Maya Calendar? The Maya, whose culture in Central America and southern Mexico peaked around 800 A.D. before going into steep decline, had an advanced calendar system that incorporated the movement of the sun, moon and planets. For the Maya, time was cyclical and repeated itself, making certain days or months lucky or unlucky for certain things, like agriculture or fertility. The Maya calendar reset in December of 2012, inspiring many to see the date as an end-of-days prophecy. The Maya Concept of Time: To the Maya, time was cyclical: it would repeat itself and certain days had characteristics. This notion of cyclical as opposed to lineal time is not unknown to us: for example, many people consider Mondays to be ââ¬Å"badâ⬠days and Fridays to be ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠days (unless they fall on the thirteenth of the month, in which case they are unlucky). The Maya took the concept further: although we consider months and weeks to be cyclical, but years to be lineal, they considered all time as cyclical and certain days could ââ¬Å"returnâ⬠centuries later. The Maya were aware that a solar year was roughly 365 days long and they referred to it as a ââ¬Å"haab.â⬠They divided a haab into 20 ââ¬Å"monthsâ⬠(to the Maya, ââ¬Å"uinalâ⬠) of 18 days each: to this was added 5 days annually for a total of 365. These five days, called ââ¬Å"wayeb,â⬠were added at the end of the year and were considered very unlucky. The Calendar Round: The earliest Maya Calendars (dating from the preclassic Maya era, or about 100 A.D.) are referred to as the Calendar Round. The Calendar Round was actually two calendars that overlapped one another. The first calendar was the Tzolkin cycle, which consisted of 260 days, which roughly corresponds to the time of human gestation as well as the Maya agricultural cycle. Early Mayan astronomers used the 260 day calendar to record the movements of the planets, sun and moon: it was a very sacred calendar. When used consecutively with the standard 365 day haab calendar, the two would align every 52 years. The Maya Long Count Calendar: The Maya developed another calendar, better suited for measuring longer periods of time. The Maya Long Count used only the haab or 365 day calendar. A date was given in terms of Baktuns (periods of 400 years) followed by Katuns (periods of 20 years) followed by Tuns (years) followed by Uinals (periods of 20 days) and ending with the Kins (number of days 1-19). If you added all of those numbers up, you would get the number of days that had passed since the starting point of Maya time, which was sometime between August 11 and September 8, 3114 B.C. (the exact date is subject to some debate). These dates are usually expressed as a series of numbers like so: 12.17.15.4.13 November 15, 1968, for example. Thats 12x400 years, 17x20 years, 15 years, 4x20 days plus eleven days since the beginning of Maya time. 2012 and The End of Maya Time: Baktuns - periods of 400 years - are counted on a base-13 cycle. On December 20, 2012, the Maya Long Count Date was 12.19.19.19.19. When one day was then added, the entire calendar reset to 0. The thirteenth Baktun since the beginning of Maya time therefore came to an end on December 21, 2012. This of course led to much speculation about dramatic changes: some predictions for the end of the Maya Long Count Calendar included the end of the world, a new age of consciousness, a reversal of the Earths magnetic poles, the arrival of the Messiah, etc. Needless to say, none of those things happened. In any event, historical Maya records do not indicate that they gave much thought to what would happen at the end of the calendar. Sources: Burland, Cottie with Irene Nicholson and Harold Osborne. Country risk analysis Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Country risk analysis - Research Paper Example Therefore, the countryââ¬â¢s economy is growing and when united with its population increase, India is indeed a very significant nation for investment in the world (Machiraju 36). This paper will seek to discuss a country risk analysis with reference to India by taking the perspective of a multinational corporation considering expanding its operations into that country, and is intended to assess the business environment in that country. Geographical Location Bounded in the south eastern part by the Arabian sea, in south by the Indian Ocean, and on the south eastern side by the Bengal Bay, the country of India shares her border land with Bhutan in the north-eastern side, Pakistan on the western angle, and Nepal, China, Burma, and Bangladesh on the eastern side (Machiraju 49). India covers an area of 1,269,219 square miles (3,287,263 sq km); the capital city is New Delhi, while the major cities include Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Kolkata. With regard to the Indian Ocean, India l ies within the vicinity of Maldives and Sri Lanka while the islands of Nicobar and Andaman share the maritime border with the states of Indonesia and Thailand (Saleem 66). This indicates that India lays within a very vibrant economic location ââ¬â a factor that gives this country too much international openness. Thus, any multinational corporation considering expanding its operations into this country should do so without hesitation. Accordingly, the Indian naval hydrographic charts maintains that the coastline of India measures up to 4,700à mi (7,517 kilometers) lengthwise; within that distance, 3,400à mi (5,423 kilometers) belong to Indiaââ¬â¢s peninsular and 1,300à mi (2,094 kilometers) to the Nicobar, Andaman, and Lakshadweep chains of the island (Devonshire-Ellis 48). This country has several rivers which major origin is Himalaya that flows through the country to the Bengal Bay. Brahmaputra and Ganges are the major rivers supplying India with larger amounts of wate r. The Ganges River has important tributaries such as the Kosi and Yamuna (Carbaugh 54). Cases of flooding are common with the Yamuna tributary but the major peninsular rivers such as the Tapti and Narmada have steeper gradients, which deter them from causing floods. The country is geographically divisive and the costal characteristics comprise the marshy Kutch Ran situated in the western part of India (Bouchet, Ephraim, and Bertrand 50). The country has alluvial Sundarbans delta found in eastern India. Climate The Himalayas Mountains and the Thar Desert have a great influence on Indiaââ¬â¢s climate. Fact findings show that they both act as the driving force of the countryââ¬â¢s major sources of income. They are the pivotal determiners of the winter and summer monsoons winds, hence influencing the culture and economy of the state strongly (Machiraju 55). The Himalayas also shield India from the excruciating wrath of the cold katabatic winds of Central Asia by keeping the India n subcontinent bulk warmer as opposed to similar states under same latitudes (Carbaugh 84). The Desert of Thar has a pragmatic role to play as it attracts the moisture-laden summer monsoon winds, which blow from the south-west. These winds are very important to the people of this country as they provide most of the countryââ¬â¢s rainfall when they blow between the months of June and October (Saleem 81). India has four predominant climatic groupings, namely
